The Top 5 Benefits of Wood Furniture for Your Space
Why I Build Modern Rustic Wood Furniture
Ikea and Wal-Mart are great. Their furniture and various home goods serve a big purpose in the modern world. Namely, there are over 7.8 BILLION PEOPLE living on the planet today. Think about that number for a second. That’s almost 8 THOUSAND MILLION PEOPLE.
The inputs needed to house, cloth, and feed that many people are ENOURMOUS.
For the scope of this post, we’ll focus on that first need: shelter.
In the developed world, your house and how you fill it is of utmost importance. Since there are millions (billions?) of people needing to furnish their home and make them comfortable places to live, this is where companies like Ikea and Wal-Mart come into play.
They are huge companies that can mass produce/sell furniture very cheaply. But the style and quality of the furniture is very boring and utilitarian. It can be made of various materials: plastics, particle board, or metals. Solid wood furniture from these companies is often rare, but lucky for you, that’s where Origin Woodworks comes in :).
I build custom modern rustic (live edge) wood furniture because I want to combat the often cheap looking, boring furniture you find at Ikea and Wal-Mart. I want your space to feel comfortable, unique, and warm. The very first coffee table I built for Origin Woodworks was for myself and I’ve seen firsthand the benefits of having wood furniture in your space.
Wood Furniture: The Benefits
A Better Mental State
A recent article by Psychology Today points out that seeing wood grain in your living space can lead to lower stress levels. Wood can remind us of our more primal needs to be outside, to times when we weren’t stressed out in an office 24/7 looking at multiple glowing screens.
It’s Exceptionally Durable
This is both an environmental and financial benefit. Environmentally speaking, when home goods have to be replaced infrequently the environment benefits because less raw materials get used and thrown away. This also benefits you, the buyer, because although custom wood furniture is more expensive upfront it tends to last several lifetimes meaning you buy less often.
It’s Eco-Friendly
Continuing on the eco-friendly track, building with wood is eco-friendly because forest management in North America has very high standards. In fact, since 1953 North America has seen a net increase of 50% of harvestable forest. I also only use locally sourced wood from mills in and around the Springfield, MO area so you can rest assured that 1. local money stays local and 2. that the inputs to source my raw materials are minimal.
It’s Functional Art
The particular style I build, modern rustic live edge, tends to be a statement piece for your living or work space. The earthy look and asymmetry make it stand out and potentially be a conversation piece. Our slogan is “Discover Your Own Slice of Nature” and this is fitting because the furniture I make looks as if a raw, natural slice of a tree is sitting in your space with it’s natural beauty waiting to be admired.
It’s Easy to Clean & Maintain
I mostly finish my pieces with multiple coats of oil-based finish. This makes the furniture both water-resistant and also very easy to clean. Simply get out the furniture polish and dust!
As you can see, wood furniture is a great choice for your living and/or work space. It has been used for thousands of years and proves to be a solid (hehe) investment. Interested in what I have to offer? Hop on over and see for yourself: Shop Online
